"Enlighten the people generally, and tyranny and oppressions of body and mind will vanish like evil spirits at the dawn of day."

MISSION: THE NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY POLITICAL UNION IS A COMMUNITY OF STUDENTS UNITED BY THEIR COMMON INTEREST IN DISCUSSION OF POLITICAL AND GLOBAL AFFAIRS.

The Northwestern University Political Union is a community of students with varying political viewpoints, united by their common interest in discussion of political and global affairs. Weekly meetings are student-run and center around various student-chosen debate topics. The Political Union also sponsors guest speakers and faculty panels, providing an intimate forum for engagement with leading public intellectuals and political figures.

Most importantly, we believe in the power of active student contributions to the Political Union as we seek to put student voices in dialogue with one another and with public leaders. Founded in the Spring of 2008, the organization has grown quickly as students have found both intellectual fulfillment and camaraderie with friends through the society. We look forward to your involvement in the Political Union as we seek to tackle the most important questions in public affairs as a Northwestern community.

A Brief History:

The Political Union was founded in the spring of 2008 by a group of students who debated in apartments while hanging out and enjoying a few libations. They decided this would be a good model for a debate forum on campus. They took the idea to former Northwestern President Bienen and he loved it. The club took off from there.

The Union grew to have such traditions as bringing guest speakers, the party divisions, Civics & Snacks, State of the Political Union, and most importantly--going to the Celtic Knot every Monday following that week's debate.

Over time, Political Union became more structured, adding a defined executive board, actual weekly board meetings, and larger panel events. Now, the club hosts its largest weekly debates debates in years and hopes to continue its strong traditions well into the future.
